Desktop Lock Express (DTLEP) is access control software designed to lock your system and prevent unauthorized use of your computer. It is the lite version of Desktop Lock. If you want more control over the locked system, check out Desktop Lock.
After DTLEP has been installed, you need to set a password first. Then, you can click to lock your system. The locked system can be unlocked by entering the password and clicking .
DTLEP can also be configured to lock the desktop automatically at system startup.
Without a password, anyone can unlock the locked desktop. The password also protects Desktop Lock Express from unauthorized user configuration changes and uninstallation.
So, the first thing to do after installing Desktop Lock Express, is to click the button in its main window to open the settings window, and then click to set a password.
When setting the password, you can set an optional password hint. To display this hint in the password windows, click then select .
The password hint can be revealed by anyone, so please do not make it identical or similar to your password.
To remove the password, click in the set password window.
But be cautious: if you choose to remove the password, anyone will be able to unlock the locked system and modify the settings. Individuals could even create a new password that you do not know, resulting in your inability to access the main program and unlock the locked system.
Now that you have set a password, you can click in the main window to lock the desktop.
Once the desktop is locked, unauthorized individuals will be unable to access your files or use applications on your computer. Desktop Lock Express actually blocks all keyboard and mouse inputs to achieve this purpose.
By enabling the option in the settings, Desktop Lock Express can automatically lock the system when any user logs in.
Additionally, you can use a command line switch to lock the system, by creating a shortcut to the main program (DTLEP.exe) and appending a parameter "/lock" to the command line, or by using a batch script.
As a basic feature of Desktop Lock, if the computer reboots without being unlocked first, Desktop Lock Express will automatically re-lock it. This feature prevents individuals from bypassing the lock by forcing a reboot.
When the desktop is locked, Desktop Lock Express displays a password window on the screen. You can enter the correct password and click to unlock the desktop.
If you have set a password hint, you can click and then select to display it.
If you have forgotten your password and have made several unsuccessful attempts, a new menu item labeled will appear in the options menu. This feature allows you to unlock the desktop using your registration information; however, this is only available for registered versions.
To change settings, click in the main window. Alternatively, you may click the located to the right of the Settings button to reveal a menu containing all settings, which allows you to adjust the font, color theme, and language, or change the password directly.
There are 2 different paths to set or change the password:
Set the background color for the locked desktop.
By default, this option is set to , which means it adopts the background color currently set by the user on their desktop.
To specify a color different from the current desktop color, select from the dropdown box.
By default, this option is set to , meaning the locked desktop will display only the background color (either the current desktop color or a specified color).
If you change it to , the current system background picture (i.e., wallpaper) will be used. If the system background mode is "Solid color", since there is no wallpaper, the above specified background color will be used. If the system background mode is "Slideshow", the currently active picture will be used.
To designate a background image, select from the dropdown box.
By default, Desktop Lock Express creates a background window that is large enough to cover the whole screen (or all monitors if you are using multiple monitors). Your desktop (screen) and all running programs are hidden behind the background window, and therefore cannot be seen.
If you enable this option, Desktop Lock Express won't use the background window to cover the screen. Consequently, the screen's contents will be visible and will refresh as usual during changes. However, since the desktop is locked, users are unable to interact with the desktop and running applications, such as typing, clicking, or switching between windows. The screen remains "read-only" for users.
If you enable this option, Desktop Lock Express will automatically lock the desktop when any user logs in.
Desktop Lock Express is not free software. Before you purchase a license and activate your registration, it works in trial mode for evaluation purposes only, and it will stop working when the evaluation period expires. In trial mode, anyone can bypass the password to unlock the desktop, or enter the main program to change settings.
